Train to develop attributes and not tricks
"Train attributes and not tricks." This is something my students always hear me preach and in the social media world it's message is more important than ever. Take this one arm #handstand for example.
I love the shape. I find it one of more beautiful hand balancing poses but the real reward of training it is that it forces me to improve my flexibility and it gives me a fun challenging way to do so. Increased flexibility improves my health, movement options and vitality just as increased strength or any other attribute I work on. Going to the gym daily to work my flexibility is challenging both physically and mentally. I lack motivation to "just stretch" but I love the challenge offered by this Handstand shape and so my goal of increased flexibility is accomplished by setting a fun movement challenge for myself. A Muscle Up is another great example of a movement that by itself is nothing. Muscle ups aren't graded in gymnastics, they are simply a way to get above the rings and if you can't do one its most likely because you lack pulling and pushing strength. That simple, you need to get stronger. Who cares if you can do a Muscle Up. Your life won't change much if you try to swing and air hump your way above the rings but if you really train to develop the attributes needed to perform a strict Muscle Up you will have to increase your strength and THAT is a great thing. I am training for life and not for stunts so while you may enjoy the show remember the goal is not the move but all the changes and benefits that learning the move can bring to your life.
